The Ultimate Guide to Custom Wedding Dresses: How to Create Your Dream Gown

Creating a custom wedding gown is a journey as unique as your love story. At Versailles Atelier Bridal in South Jordan, Utah, we specialize in helping brides turn their vision into reality, ensuring that every detail of their gown reflects their personality, style, and dreams.

Here’s a step-by-step guide to designing your dream wedding dress, complete with insights from one of our real brides who have walked this path with us.

Step 1: The Creative Consultation

The journey to your dream wedding dress at Versailles Atelier Bridal begins with a 30-minute phone call consultation with our owner, Natasha. This personalized session is designed to dive deep into your vision for your gown. Before the consultation, you’ll send inspiration images that reflect your style and preferences.

During the meeting, Natasha will work with you to understand your ideas and translate them into a custom design that’s uniquely yours.

To secure this appointment, a $300 deposit is required. This deposit not only covers the time spent sketching your design but also includes the costs of shipping in samples from our designers and fabric swatches, which will be ready for your in-person appointment at a later time.

This step is crucial in ensuring that every detail aligns perfectly with your vision and sets the stage for creating the gown of your dreams. If you are ready to schedule your consultation, click here to submit your appointment request. Be sure to mention ‘Creative Consultation’ as the type of appointment and time of day that works best for your call.

London's Inspiration:

"I’ve always loved fashion so much, so having a one-of-a-kind wedding dress was always super important to me! I was inspired by the Isabella gown designed by Kim Kassas."

Step 2: Sketching and Design

Based on your consultation, our designers will sketch out the gown, incorporating the elements you love. Whether you’re drawn to timeless elegance or something more modern and unique, our goal is to create a gown that is truly one-of-a-kind. The sketch will serve as a blueprint for the dress, which will be made using only the finest fabrics and materials.

London's Experience:

"Versailles Atelier Bridal is the most amazing bridal dress company. Natasha and her sweet team were so helpful and amazing! Natasha is incredibly knowledgeable about fashion and knew exactly what dress and designer I was inspired by to make my dress down to every single detail!"

Step 3: Selecting Fabrics and Embellishments

During your custom gown appointment at Versailles Atelier, we’ll take a comprehensive approach to ensuring your dress is perfect in every detail. You’ll have the opportunity to try on multiple styles from our collection, allowing us to explore different silhouettes, fabrics, and embellishments.

As you try on each style, we’ll take photos, which will serve as visual references for your custom gown pattern. These images are crucial in capturing your preferred look and ensuring that your final design reflects your vision.

Once we’ve narrowed down the styles that resonate with you, we’ll move on to selecting the luxurious fabrics, laces, and embellishments that will bring your gown to life. Our custom designer offers a wide array of options, and at Versailles Atelier, there are no limitations when it comes to fabric, color, or intricate details.

The more time we have to source the specific materials you desire, the smoother this process will be. Whether you dream of intricate beadwork, delicate lace, or unique textures, we guarantee that every element of your dress is crafted to perfection.

Step 4: Multiple Fittings

The fitting process is where your custom gown truly starts to come to life. You’ll begin with one or more muslin fittings, where we use a mock-up version of your dress made from simple fabric to assess the fit and make adjustments before proceeding with the final materials. These fittings allow us to ensure that our initial pattern design is translating perfectly to your unique shape and style.

Throughout the production process, we’ll also receive images from our production team as your gown takes shape. We’ll forward these images to you, giving you the opportunity to see and approve each stage of the gown’s development. This way, you can be confident that your dress is exactly as you envisioned.

While these fittings and updates are integral to the gown-making process, it’s important to remember that final in-person adjustments, such as alterations, will still be necessary as your wedding day approaches. These final tweaks will ensure that your dress fits you perfectly when you walk down the aisle.

Step 5: The Arrival of Your Custom Wedding Dress

The moment you’ve been eagerly awaiting has arrived—your custom wedding dress is in store! When we notify you that your dress is ready for try on, we’ll invite you to bring along your wedding shoes and any specific undergarments you plan to wear on your big day. This ensures we can check the overall fit and can advise any possible adjustments needed by a seamstress. Your bridal consultant will take detailed notes on any tweaks needed to achieve that flawless, wedding-day-perfect fit.

We also recommend bringing along a trusted bridesmaid or your mom, so they can learn how to help you into your gown on the day itself. This can be a fun and special moment to share with those closest to you as you see your vision come to life.

London's Reaction:

"When I saw my custom dress for the first time, it was so beautiful I really couldn’t believe it! It was just such an amazing moment I will never forget!"
