Wedding Gown Fabric — Which Is Right for You?

When you’re trying to decide which wedding gown fabric is right for you, you have much to consider. That’s the time to consult the experts with experience in all types of wedding dresses: the team at Versailles Atelier, serving brides in the Salt Lake City and South Jordan areas.

What Season Are You Getting Married In?

Sometimes it’s easy to tell what fabrics you can rule out. If you’re getting married in Salt Lake City in July, you won’t want a heavily beaded long-sleeved velvet bridal gown. Similarly, if your wedding is in December, you can rule out a sleeveless chiffon wedding dress. The last thing you want on your big day is to be uncomfortable. You don’t want your teeth to chatter, and you certainly don’t want to get your wedding gown sweaty.

It can be harder to guess what the temperature will be for a spring or fall wedding, because these seasons can vary so widely. You may want to go with a medium-weight fabric — or, you can opt to add a wrap or jacket if you get chilly. There are some stunning options out there. A jacket can also double as a modesty modification to your bridal gown if you have a temple wedding.

What’s Your Style?

Do you love sparkle and shine? Delicate lace? Simple satin? If you’re not sure, you may want to try on a few different styles. However, if your everyday style is tailored and unadorned, you can probably rule out poofy taffeta gowns. Similarly, if you love beads and rhinestones, a classic A-line is likely not for you.

Heavier Fabrics

  • Satinis a heavy, glossy luxuriant fabric that’s perfect for the most special of occasions.
  • Mikadois an extremely luxurious fabric, but it’s more matte than shiny like satin, so it’s perfect for the bride who loves a lavish fabric, but not an opulent one.
  • Brocadewedding gowns are heavily woven in intricate patterns and designs.

Medium-Weight Fabrics

  • Linenis cooler than satin and can provide full coverage with more breathability.
  • Lacewedding gowns often are constructed of a combination of cotton and synthetic fibers and can be made heavier or lighter.
  • Charmeuseis a perfect choice for the bride who loves satin but doesn’t want the weight of a heavier fabric.

Lightweight Fabrics

  • Chiffonis a favorite fabric of brides who love a layered, delicate look.
  • Tulleis a lightweight fabric that looks like netting and can be made either stiff or soft to the touch.
  • Taffetais crisp, papery fabric as light as spun sugar.
  • Organzawedding dresses are airy and sheer, with a hint of stiffness for a shape that will last all day.

Hopefully this short tutorial has given you some ideas for the type of wedding gown that’s right for you. For assistance from some of the best in the business, come to the top bridal boutique in South Jordan — Versailles Atelier.
